HI, I’m Lita, the weaver and creatrix behind PrettyPosa Designs.
I was first inspired to become a weaver when I went to an exhibit of Scandinavian textiles while I was living in Minnesota. Something deep inside me screamed: “I want to do THAT!” That voice has remained the most consistent of all my varying whims and passions. Now, 20 years later, even after completing a 4 year program at the HIll Institute in Massachusetts as a master weaver, I still consider myself a novice in the big endless world of weaving.
Why do I weave?
It is often a tedious, frustrating, and ridiculously time consuming art form. In no other aspect of my personality do I have the traits of being an extremely patient perfectionist. I continue weaving in an attempt to answer that question. It is a drive I have inside me that is unexplainable, and irresistible. Despite so many other unanswered questions in my life, I simply KNOW that I am meant to be a weaver. The ancient archetype of weaver, something humans have been doing since the beginning of time, is alive and well expressing itself through me! Because to me, magic happens at the loom when the threads line up, move in their ordered formation, and with the fly of the shuttle and clack of the beater, fabric unfolds before your eyes.
I also believe that handmade items make a difference by the energy they carry and the quality they embody. In a world where everything is mass-produced as cheaply as possible by faceless machines or by people who are treated as faceless machines, the handmade adds not only artistry and beauty but also integrity and value to our lives.
In Costa Rica
I have taken my weaving with me from my roots in the Midwest United States, through our life aboard a sailboat and on to my new home in Costa Rica, where I am inspired endlessly by the extravagant colorful nature all around me. My current work reflects this inspiration, and each piece is a one of a kind tribute to a species or scene from my local tropical environment.
Each piece I produce has countless hours of thought, story, and craftsmanship put into the design and creation. Each thread goes through my hands multiple times and intention is woven into every step of the process. Many of my designs have coded messages written into the drafts, and I delight in secret symbolism embedded in cloth. Every piece I make is intended as a visual and tactile reminder of the beauty and creative power that flows through each one of us.
The name PrettyPosa Designs, was inspired by the adorable way my son, who, when he was first learning to speak, said the word “butterfly”. In Spanish the word for butterfly is Mariposa, and in his toddler “Spanglish” he would call Mariposas “Prettyposas”. Since I have a strong fascination with weaving the color schemes and designs found in the myriad butterflies of Costa Rica, the name PrettyPosa was born.
